Jeff Bezos Reportedly Might Join Bid for Liverpool Stake

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owner of Liverpool FC, is in discussions with a consortium led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, to sell a minority stake in the Premier League club. This group also includes the Mittal family, notably Aditya Mittal, who recently failed to acquire the Seattle Seahawks. The potential deal could value Liverpool at approximately $6 billion, highlighting the immense financial scale of top-tier sports franchises. FSG has neither confirmed nor denied Jeff Bezos’s involvement, though reports suggest the Amazon founder has held talks about joining the bid.

Bezos, currently the world’s fourth-richest person with a net worth near $254 billion, has not previously engaged in sports ownership but is frequently linked to major team sales due to his vast resources. His name surfaced in connection with the Washington Commanders sale in 2021 and was rumored during the Boston Celtics sale, though those interests did not materialize into official offers. Representatives for Bezos’s companies Amazon and Blue Origin have declined to comment on the Liverpool discussions. The consortium led by Bhatia signals a continuation of the Mittal family’s expanding sports investment portfolio, which includes a $1.65 billion purchase of the Indian Premier League’s Rajasthan Royals.

The trend of investors acquiring minority stakes in sports teams is growing, as seen with recent NFL sales where minority owners become majority owners over time. This approach is favored by leagues for thorough vetting and due diligence processes. Such investments enable new capital to enter sports ownership while allowing incumbent owners to maintain control and realize liquidity. Liverpool’s diversified revenue model, global fan base, and storied history make it highly attractive as an institutional-grade asset, noted by investment bank Houlihan Lokey’s Harsh Talikoti, who pointed to scarcity and franchise legacy as key drivers of value.

If the deal goes through, it would not be the first time FSG has sold a minority stake in Liverpool; Dynasty Equity acquired a similar share in 2023. Amit Bhatia recently stepped down from Queens Park Rangers and is transferring his stake there, possibly to focus on this Liverpool bid. However, sources indicate that talks remain preliminary with no guaranteed outcome. The involvement of a high-profile group including Jeff Bezos and the Mittal family underscores the increasing convergence of global capital in elite sports properties, reinforcing minority ownership as the preferred entry point for significant investors.
