Google justifies its massive AI spending with a booming cloud business

Alphabet has faced skepticism from investors over its substantial AI investments, but recent financial results suggest those expenditures are paying off, particularly through the success of Google Cloud. In the latest quarter, Google Cloud's revenue surged by 82% year-over-year, reaching $24.8 billion. This growth outpaced expectations and demonstrated strong momentum driven mainly by enterprise adoption of AI solutions and infrastructure.

Beyond cloud revenue, Alphabet’s overall financial health is robust, with quarterly profits soaring to $112.1 billion, a significant rise from the $28.1 billion reported a year earlier. Total revenue also experienced a 24% increase, amounting to $119.8 billion, while Google Services revenue climbed 15%, hitting $94.5 billion. Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini, further highlights the company's expanding AI footprint, now boasting 950 million monthly active users, up from 750 million in late 2025.

Despite the impressive gains, Alphabet’s capital spending remains enormous, with projected expenditures between $180 billion and $190 billion for 2026. These funds are directed toward expanding data centers, developing chips, and scaling infrastructure critical to fulfilling growing AI demand. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai expressed strong confidence during the earnings call, citing solid long-term deals and improving market dynamics as justification for continued investments.

Pichai stressed that these compute capacity investments should bear fruit in 2027, reflecting the company’s belief in sustained demand for AI and cloud services. Alphabet's backlog of cloud contracts has also swelled to $514 billion, underscoring the expanding pipeline. Overall, the results indicate that Google’s gamble on AI-driven cloud growth is beginning to generate substantial financial returns, reassuring investors wary of its hefty spending.
