Ukraine has targeted Iranian vessels in the Caspian Sea, escalating tensions between Tehran and Kyiv. Iran summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran to express strong condemnation of what it called a “hostile and criminal act” after one sailor was killed and several others injured in the strike. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that his forces had carried out long-range strikes on targets in the Caspian Sea, including military cargo vessels linked to Iran.

The U.S. military, while continuing its naval blockade of Iran, reportedly halted air attacks to provide space for dialogue. This pause comes after a prolonged period of U.S.-led strikes and is motivated by concerns over limited air defense weapon supplies. Concurrently, technical talks between Iran and Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz have continued despite halted formal negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

The situation remains volatile, with Iran asserting control over the Strait of Hormuz and enforcing warnings on vessels in the region. Oil prices fell sharply following reports of renewed diplomatic efforts, including Pakistan’s initiative to revive U.S.-Iran talks with backing from China. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also weighed in, asserting that conflict resolution with Iran requires either regime change or significant weakening of its nuclear ambitions and policy direction. These developments show an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape involving Ukraine, the Middle East, and global powers.
