JetBlue overhauls fare options, from basic first to flexible economy. Here’s what to know

JetBlue is revamping its fare structure as it prepares to introduce its new domestic first-class product known as BlueFirst later this year. The airline will streamline economy fares under a “Main” category, eliminating its current “Core” option. Travelers will choose between economy seats with standard legroom, “Even More” seats offering extra legroom with priority boarding and security screening, and the new first-class seats upfront. This updated fare framework allows customers to select the desired level of comfort and flexibility.

Within each travel class, JetBlue will offer three fare types: Base, Standard, and Flex. Base fares are the most economical, include one carry-on but no seat selection, come with a fee for changes or cancellations, and earn one TrueBlue point per dollar spent. The Standard fare adds seat selection, waives change fees but requires any fare difference for alterations, and awards three points per dollar. The Flex option includes all Standard benefits but offers full refunds back to the original payment method, catering to travelers who want maximum flexibility.

JetBlue’s premium Mint business class, primarily for long-haul routes including Europe, will continue to provide only Standard and Flex fares and will not include a basic fare. This decision sets JetBlue apart from competitors like United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, which have recently introduced basic premium fares on domestic business class to break down price points within front-cabin seating. JetBlue’s BlueFirst domestic first class launch underlines the airline’s strategy to capitalize on growing demand for more comfortable and feature-rich premium travel options.

The fare restructuring aligns with JetBlue’s broader moves to attract a mix of travelers, from price-sensitive customers to those seeking enhanced amenities. As the airline readies its BlueFirst product debut, anticipated later this year, it continues to evolve its offerings amid competitive pressures and shifting consumer preferences. JetBlue is also expected to release its financial results soon, providing more context on how these changes fit into the company’s performance goals.
