Autonomous has introduced a new physical device called the Autonomous Key, priced at $9, designed to help users lock their most addictive apps. Unlike typical screen-time apps that rely on self-control and timers, this NFC-enabled key requires users to physically scan the key with their phone to unlock apps like Instagram or TikTok. Each unlock session lasts up to 60 minutes, after which the apps are automatically locked again. The physical separation created by leaving the key in another room or location adds an extra layer of accountability, making it harder to mindlessly access distracting apps.

The Autonomous Key offers a more affordable alternative to competitors such as Blok, Unpluq, and Brick, which come with higher price points ranging from $26.50 to $59. Although Brick includes extra features like Sleep Mode and the ability to block in-app purchases, Autonomous Key focuses on fundamental app-blocking at a fraction of the cost. The compact device is compatible with Android phones running version 8.0 and above, as well as iPhones with iOS 15 or later, making it widely accessible across popular smartphone platforms.

In addition to the hardware key, there is a companion app that provides AI-driven insights into app usage patterns. It tracks how often users unlock their locked apps, the duration of access, and peak times for usage. The app adds a playful touch by delivering feedback with a sassy personality, such as suggesting users place the key further away if they unlock the apps too frequently. Notably, Autonomous Key offers its core features without any subscription fees or premium tiers, and a single key can be paired with multiple phones, making it suitable for multi-device users or even families.

The product is currently in beta following its Kickstarter campaign and has started shipping this month. It comes in five color options: pink, orange, blue, gray, and brown. While the key offers a novel approach to digital wellbeing, some users have reported that the NFC scan can require multiple attempts, suggesting it may not be ideal for apps that need quick or frequent access. If the key is lost, users currently must uninstall and reinstall the companion app or remove the key from their account to regain access. Autonomous plans to introduce a backup unlocking method in future updates.
