The WNBA is gearing up to address persistent officiating challenges by investing heavily in a centralized replay center, set to launch in 2027. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert revealed that the league is dedicating tens of millions of dollars to this initiative, which aims to enhance consistency, efficiency, and transparency in officiating. The replay hub will share facilities with the NBA’s existing center located in Secaucus, New Jersey, a system in operation since the 2014–15 season.

This move follows increasing scrutiny over officiating quality as the WNBA's popularity has soared. Past incidents, such as the controversial officiating during the 2025 semifinals and late June’s failure to call a foul on Alyssa Thomas’ throat strike on Caitlin Clark, have spotlighted the need for reforms. To tackle these concerns, Engelbert formed an officiating taskforce last offseason, involving coaches like Cheryl Reeve and Sandy Brondello, which has led to notable improvements, including an uptick in fouls called this season.

The replay center project still faces technical hurdles, especially because some WNBA games are played in multiple arenas, requiring the installation of advanced replay equipment across all venues. Players like WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike acknowledge the positive impact these resources may have on the game and relationships between officials and players. The initiative signifies a major investment in elevating the league’s officiating standards and overall competitiveness.

Separately, Engelbert also addressed an investigation into alleged salary cap circumvention by the Las Vegas Aces. After an independent external review prompted by 2024’s $100,000 per player partnership deals with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the WNBA found insufficient evidence to impose discipline. The league confirmed it would continue investigating should new information surface, closing this chapter while focusing attention on officiating improvements.
