Counting Stars Shines In Run Towards Breeders Cup And Year End Honors

Thoroughbred filly Counting Stars has captured significant attention in the 2026 racing season with a series of impressive performances, most notably her dominant win in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga. Under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., she took the lead early and fended off a strong challenge from Always A Runner, ultimately winning by 4 ¼ lengths and setting a new stakes record time of 1:48.98. This victory further cements her reputation as one of the top three-year-old fillies racing today, drawing high praise from trainer Mark Casse.

Counting Stars’ rise has been remarkable since her debut in September 2025 at Churchill Downs, where she won convincingly by four lengths. Trained by Casse, a Hall of Fame conditioner with over 4,000 career wins, Counting Stars has amassed six wins in ten career starts, including key graded Stakes victories such as the Fantasy and Acorn Stakes. Her earnings currently stand at more than $1.6 million, reflecting her consistent excellence on the track and the high regard in which she is held by her connections.

Casse has voiced strong confidence in the filly’s capabilities, even nominating her for the prestigious Triple Crown, a rare honor for a filly given the focus on male horses in those events. His strategy has been to focus on cultivating her as the champion three-year-old filly by avoiding competition against colts, cementing her status in the female division. Owned by West Point Thoroughbreds, the $150,000 purchase continues to shine as one of the standout horses of her generation.

Looking ahead, Counting Stars is expected to target the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga on August 22, with the goal of further solidifying her credentials for year-end honors. As she continues to perform at the highest level, her stellar season positions her as a leading contender for top three-year-old filly accolades and possibly Breeders’ Cup success later in the year. Trainer Casse and her team remain optimistic about her continued trajectory toward racing greatness.
