Elon Musk’s X settles multiyear legal battle with the World Federation of Advertisers

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has resolved a prolonged legal dispute with the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), officially ending litigation tied to allegations of a "systematic illegal boycott." The lawsuit, filed by X in 2024, targeted the WFA and its Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), accusing them of coordinating advertiser pullback after X experienced revenue declines following Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of the company in 2022. The case named major advertisers such as Mars, CVS Health, Shell, and Lego, who denied any wrongdoing, asserting that brand advertising choices are autonomous.

The disagreement centered around concerns that WFA-developed brand safety guidelines led advertisers to reduce spending on X amid fears of their ads appearing adjacent to harmful content. Musk’s platform argued that the coalition’s influence was damaging to its business, but a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit in March 2026 for lacking evidence of harm under competition laws. X pursued an appeal, but the recent joint statement from both parties confirms a mutual agreement to move forward without further conflict, with WFA discontinuing GARM as of August 9, 2024.

WFA emphasized its commitment to freedom of speech—a principle consistent with its founding—and stated that it will not revive GARM or similar initiatives, aiming instead to foster brand safety through innovation beneficial to consumers, brands, and platforms alike. This settlement recalibrates the relationship between X and industry advertisers, who had previously been at odds with Musk’s provocative attitude toward ad spending reductions, including his notorious public rebuke urging advertisers who paused spending to "go f*** yourself."

The resolution marks a significant moment for X as it seeks to rebuild advertiser trust and stabilize its revenue base following a turbulent period post-acquisition. It also signals a potential shift in how social media platforms and advertiser coalitions may collaborate in the future to balance content moderation challenges with commercial interests. Musk’s platform now looks to refocus on growth and innovation with a cleaner slate between itself and global advertising figures.
