India’s mobile app market is evolving from simply being the largest in terms of downloads to becoming a rapidly growing arena for app monetization. In the second quarter of 2026, consumer spending on apps in India reached a record $345 million, a 35% increase year-over-year, driven predominantly by generative AI, streaming, and productivity apps. This shift reflects Indian users’ growing willingness to pay for digital subscriptions, supported by broader acceptance of digital payments like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and digital wallets which simplify in-app purchases.
The monetization growth in India significantly outpaces other major markets, including Mexico and Turkey, while showing contrasting trends with the U.S., where app revenue experienced a slight decline during the same period. Although India's revenue per download remains much lower compared to countries like the U.S., South Korea, and Japan, the rapid increase in revenue per download suggests India has substantial potential for long-term growth. Non-gaming apps now account for a larger share of revenue, rising to 68% of India’s total app income in the first half of 2026, indicating diversification in app monetization beyond traditional gaming.
Generative AI apps have been key contributors to this surge, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude dominating nearly 83% of India’s AI-related app revenues in Q2. Meanwhile, subscription models continue to thrive, bolstered by global apps such as Google One becoming top earners in the Indian market. Streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and JioHotstar also saw increased consumer spending. While the initial excitement around AI-fueled subscriptions has moderated in recent months, the upward trajectory in subscription revenues remains strong, driven largely by ongoing user adoption of premium digital content and productivity-enhancing tools.
This emerging trend reflects a broader digital transformation in India’s consumer behavior toward paid app usage, bridging the gap between market size and revenue performance. As users show greater openness to paying for value-added services across AI, entertainment, and productivity, developers and global platforms are increasingly focusing on India as a promising market for app monetization. Industry analysts highlight that this willingness to pay, in combination with rapid digital payments adoption, marks India’s transition from a download-heavy market to a fast-growing ecosystem for sustainable app revenue.
