WhatsApp is piloting a new feature that organizes messages from large businesses into a dedicated folder called “Offers & Updates.” Announced after Meta’s Q2 2026 earnings call, this move coincides with the platform’s rapid growth in paid messaging and subscriptions, which contributed to Meta’s family of apps segment exceeding $1 billion in revenue. By automatically shifting messages from big enterprises like banks or airlines into this separate folder a few hours after delivery, WhatsApp aims to declutter users’ main chat timelines while keeping business communications accessible.
Currently, the automatic reallocation timing varies, with Meta testing periods up to 24 hours before messages move to the specialized folder. Users have the option to disable this sorting feature but cannot control the timing of message transfers. This new setup is designed to ensure that offers, discount codes, and delivery notifications do not congest personal chats, enhancing user experience by creating space for individual and group messages. Large businesses engaged through WhatsApp’s Business Platform are initially part of this test, while smaller business accounts remain excluded—for now.
This initiative builds on WhatsApp’s continued efforts to reduce spam and improve message management. In recent years, the company has implemented tools allowing users to unsubscribe from marketing messages, limited the number of broadcast messages businesses can send, and restricted business messaging without user responses. Despite these efforts, many users still find their inboxes overwhelmed, suggesting that the folder system might slightly ease chaos but won't fully address user control over message filtering until more options are provided.
Meta also highlighted that over one million businesses globally are leveraging WhatsApp’s AI-powered agents for customer interactions, with success stories like Brazil’s car rental firm Movida noting improved conversions and support. As AI adoption expands within WhatsApp’s ecosystem, the platform faces the challenge of balancing personal communication with increasing automated business outreach, aiming to avoid becoming overrun by AI-driven messages. This new folder test marks another step towards creating a more organized, user-friendly space for both consumers and businesses on the app.
