Autonomous has introduced a $9 NFC key called Autonomous Key, designed to curb smartphone app addiction by requiring physical interaction to unlock distracting applications. Unlike traditional screen-time limiting apps that depend on users' willpower and timers, this key pairs with a companion app and physically locks selected apps until the key is scanned. Once unlocked, apps remain accessible for up to 60 minutes before automatically relocking, encouraging users to place the key in a separate location to add friction to impulsive app use. The device supports Android 8.0+ and iOS 15+ and comes in five colors, aiming to simplify digital detox at a budget-friendly price.
The Autonomous Key offers a cost-effective alternative to competitors like Blok, Unpluq, and Brick, whose devices range from $26.50 to $59 and include additional features like Sleep Mode and in-app purchase blocking. While Brick provides some advanced options, Autonomous Key focuses on the core locking mechanism without subscription requirements or premium tiers, and one key can be paired with multiple phones, making it appealing for multi-device users and families. The companion app additionally delivers AI-powered analytics with a humorous tone that tracks user behavior patterns and offers playful advice to improve habits.
However, the key isn’t without limitations. During testing, the NFC scan occasionally required several tries to register, suggesting it may not be ideal for apps that need frequent quick access like messaging or email. Another practical concern is the potential loss of the key, with current contingencies involving reinstalling the app or removing the key from the account. The company is working on a backup unlock feature to mitigate this risk, which is expected in a future app update. The Autonomous Key came out of a successful Kickstarter and started shipping in early August 2026.
This physical locking solution represents a novel approach to managing digital distraction by reducing reliance on willpower alone. Its straightforward design and affordable price could make it a popular choice for those seeking to minimize time wasted on addictive apps like Instagram and TikTok. While it doesn’t offer all the bells and whistles of higher-end devices, its simplicity and physicality may help users better control their screen time in practical and tangible ways.
