Meet The Highest-Ranking Black Executive In Sports

Mark Tatum, NBA’s Deputy Commissioner since 2014, is the highest-ranking Black executive in sports. When named by Commissioner Adam Silver with unanimous approval from league owners, Tatum, who was then leading global marketing partnerships, felt the historic significance. Overseeing league business operations that generate over $14 billion in revenue, Tatum manages 30 franchises averaging $5.4 billion each in value, as well as international NBA leagues in China and Africa, with plans for a European league by 2027. He highlights the NBA as a global sport with a combined market cap around $180 billion.

Born in Vietnam to a Jamaican father and Asian mother and raised in Brooklyn, Tatum reflects on representation as critical, recalling the trailblazing role of Simon Gourdine, the first Black NBA Deputy Commissioner in 1974. He observes the underappreciated economic impact of Black-owned businesses and stresses the need for better education around their contributions. August’s Black Business Month, launched in 2004, provides an opportunity to recognize this influence.

Tatum draws inspiration from exemplary Black business leaders who have shaped industries with vision and resilience. David Grain, founder of the $2.4 billion private equity firm Grain Management, impressed him with principled leadership and commitment to representation. Sheila Johnson, BET co-founder and a billionaire with stakes in NBA, WNBA, and NHL teams, taught him the value of perseverance and belief in women’s sports. Ed Lewis, Essence magazine cofounder, demonstrated building platforms that serve underrepresented audiences.

Other figures Tatum honors include Reginald Lewis, the first Black American to lead a billion-dollar company through the $985 million leveraged buyout of Beatrice International in 1987, and Robert Smith, founder of Vista Equity Partners, managing over $100 billion with a net worth near $10 billion. Smith’s dedication to supporting Black entrepreneurs and creating wealth in the community stands out for Tatum as a powerful example of leadership and generosity rarely spotlighted in mainstream media.
