Amazon announced that its AI-powered Alexa+ assistant will now be available for free on all compatible Fire TV devices across the U.S., without requiring an Amazon Prime subscription. This marks a significant change, as previously users without Prime had to pay $19.99 per month to access Alexa+. The upgrade will roll out automatically, with no need to download an app or subscribe separately.

The Alexa+ update enhances user experience by enabling conversational search, AI-driven content recommendations, and smart home device controls directly through Fire TV. Users can now request shows by descriptive criteria like genre or theme rather than specific titles, as well as manage smart home functions such as viewing Ring camera feeds on the television. Compatible devices include the latest Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and certain models from brands like Hisense and Panasonic.

Amazon’s move aligns with an industry-wide trend toward embedding AI capabilities into consumer electronics. Google deployed its Gemini AI on Google TV earlier this year, and Roku enhanced its voice assistant with AI last year. By incorporating AI more broadly into their platforms, these companies aim to increase user engagement; Amazon notes that Alexa+ users engage in almost twice as many conversations compared to the original Alexa experience on Fire TV.

While Amazon emphasizes the convenience and interactivity Alexa+ offers, such automatic upgrades have sparked discussion about user choice and privacy.
