White House Denies Involvement in Lakers Sale to Josh Kushner

The White House has publicly denied any involvement in the recent $12.5 billion sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to Joshua Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger. The denial aimed to quash rampant speculation linking the transaction to President Donald Trump, especially given Kushner's connection as the younger brother of Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. Despite federal investigations into financial irregularities tied to the current owner, Mark Walter, the White House made clear that the administration played no part in influencing the sale. A spokesperson for Kushner’s firm, Thrive Capital, backed this denial, labeling the rumors as false.

Mark Walter, who has owned the Lakers for under 14 months, announced the sale amid mounting federal probes into his insurance businesses. The timing and high-profile players involved in the sale prompted internet theories suggesting Trump’s administration either pressured Walter or influenced the deal to benefit the Kushner family. However, Walter’s holding company, TWG Global, has not commented on these narratives. Notably, Joshua Kushner identifies as a lifelong Democrat and has no official role in Trump’s White House, contrasting his brother Jared’s documented political ties and advisory roles in both Trump administrations.

Jared Kushner, married to Ivanka Trump, has long-standing connections to the former president, having served as a White House adviser and special envoy for peace. Trump notably pardoned their father, Charles Kushner, on federal charges in his first term. Despite these political entanglements surrounding the family, Joshua Kushner’s business ventures, including his investment fund Thrive Eternal, have maintained a separate profile. Just weeks before the Lakers sale, Thrive Eternal was involved in plans to invest in FIFA’s commercial projects before those efforts were called off.

The Lakers sale marks a rapid turnover in ownership for the storied NBA franchise and has ignited significant public scrutiny due to intertwined family, political, and financial interests. While the White House and Kushner representatives reject any connection to the federal probes or sale machinations, the intersection of high-profile sports ownership and political families continues to attract attention. As the sale closes, questions about the implications for the Lakers and the broader sports-business landscape remain front and center.
