US battery startups have found a lifeline in defense

U.S. battery startups faced significant challenges after the 2025 "One Big Beautiful Bill" eliminated key incentives for electric vehicles (EVs) and battery production, severely impacting future demand. However, these companies have recently secured a crucial lifeline through defense sector support. The Department of Energy (DOE) announced $500 million in grants aimed at strengthening the domestic battery supply chain, emphasizing reduced reliance on foreign sources and enhancing national security. Much of this funding has gone to startups developing battery materials and technologies integral to defense applications.

Companies like Coreshell, Lilac Solutions, and Nth Cycle are notable recipients of these DOE grants, receiving tens to hundreds of millions to expand production capabilities. For instance, Lilac Solutions secured $100 million to build a lithium processing facility by 2028, while Nth Cycle is funding a plant for recycling lithium-ion battery materials. These investments highlight the growing demand for advanced battery technologies within defense systems, powering drones, torpedoes, radios, and fighter jets, bridging a gap left by weakened consumer EV incentives.

Despite setbacks in the automotive market, defense continues to be a substantial and reliable customer for battery makers. The Pentagon's battery procurement, though smaller than the automotive industry's multi-billion-dollar market, represents a significant ongoing demand for lightweight, high-performance domestic batteries. This defense-driven investment also suggests a tacit acknowledgment within the Trump administration and federal agencies that battery technology remains vital to America’s energy future and national security, even if broader EV policy has shifted.

Looking ahead, the DOE grants may signify a recalibration of U.S. battery policy, correcting for the sharp reductions in incentives that hurt early-stage startups. While the automotive EV market expects growth in the long term, the defense sector has become the immediate anchor supporting battery innovation and domestic manufacturing. This dual demand underlines the strategic importance of batteries in both commercial and military spheres, reinforcing the need for a resilient American battery supply chain.
