Instagram’s ‘First Draft’ feature aims to make editing Reels less tedious

Instagram has introduced a new feature called "First Draft" designed to simplify the editing process for Reels. Announced on August 25, 2026, this tool automatically trims video clips and removes pauses to assemble a preliminary cut, often ready in under 10 seconds. The goal is to save content creators significant time by providing a ready-made draft they can refine, making video creation more accessible to those with little editing experience. First Draft is currently available on iPhone and can be accessed either through Instagram’s camera during recording or from the Reels gallery after selecting multiple clips.

While automated video editing is not a novel concept—similar tools exist in Adobe Firefly’s Quick Cuts and CapCut’s Auto Cut—Instagram’s unique approach is integrating this functionality directly inside its app. This reduces the need for creators to switch between multiple platforms to edit their content. This move aligns with Instagram’s ongoing efforts this year to enhance creator tools, which include features like “Replace Audio” for swapping music on posts and carousels without re-uploading, an AI assistant in its video editing app Edits, and testing a “Series” function to organize Reels into a sequential format.

The rollout of First Draft coincides with a significant moment for Instagram, as its head Adam Mosseri is slated to testify the same day at Meta’s social media addiction trial. The lawsuit accuses Meta of designing Instagram and Facebook to foster compulsive use among children and failing to mitigate associated harms—a claim that Meta denies. Despite the challenging backdrop, Instagram continues to focus on improving user experience and empowering creators with new tools.

This addition to Instagram’s Reels toolkit underscores Meta’s broader strategy to maintain its dominance in short-form video content by easing content creation barriers. Integrating automated editing directly into Instagram can attract more casual users and creators who might be deterred by the complexities of traditional editing software, thereby keeping more video production native to the Instagram environment.
