Hold up, there’s a new Twitter in town

A new social networking platform called Twitter.now has emerged, developed by the startup Operation Bluebird. The founding team includes Stephen Coates, who formerly served as trademark counsel for Twitter. The launch followed a legal dispute last year when X, the company that now owns Twitter, sued Operation Bluebird, seeking to stop it from using the Twitter name. Operation Bluebird contended that X had abandoned the Twitter and Tweet trademarks, positioning Twitter.now as a distinct service rather than a replication of the original platform.

Stephen Coates emphasized that Twitter.now aims to create a "public square" defined by trust, transparency, and user choice, departing from the traditional Twitter experience. The new platform incorporates an AI-driven system called VERA, designed to assess posts by evaluating claims, providing sources, context, and attaching trust scores. This allows users to tailor their feeds according to the credibility of posts, giving individuals more control over the content they see.

Currently, Twitter.now is in a testing phase with early access priced at $20. Operation Bluebird is actively expanding VERA’s capabilities, with a version 2.0 planned soon that will enhance filtering options by letting users set minimum trust thresholds for posts in their feed. The company acknowledges the persistent challenge of content moderation faced by all social networks, aiming to address this through its evolving AI verification engine rather than opaque algorithms.

While this new entry into the social media space comes amid ongoing debates about moderation and trust in online discourse, Twitter.now seeks to differentiate itself by focusing on transparent credibility measures. This launch reflects broader shifts in the social media landscape as platforms experiment with AI tools to balance moderation, user empowerment, and information reliability.
