How Sweden built one of Europe’s hottest startup ecosystems

Sweden has become one of Europe’s most vibrant startup hubs, building on its legacy as home to giants like Spotify and Klarna. The current wave of innovative companies includes AI-driven legal startup Legora and vibe-coding tool developer Lovable. Sophia Bendz, a general partner at Cherry Ventures, explains that the cultural perception around startups has shifted dramatically. Whereas becoming a banker or consultant was once seen as the prestigious path, today entrepreneurship is viewed as cool, combining creativity, freedom, and potential financial success.

In 2026, Sweden’s startup ecosystem raised $2.8 billion in funding, with projections to reach at least $5 billion by year-end. Although last year saw $3.2 billion raised, and 2021 had the record $8.5 billion during the height of the venture capital boom, the current numbers signal a rebounding market. Prominent emerging companies like Neko Health, co-founded by Spotify’s Daniel Ek, and autonomous freight firm Einride also highlight the diverse sectors gaining momentum in Stockholm.

Bendz points to the first generation of successful entrepreneurs as key contributors to the ecosystem’s momentum. These founders, through mentorship or starting multiple ventures, foster a culture of innovation and risk-taking. Employees from startups like Lovable and Legora are inspired to spin out their own companies, creating a cycle that strengthens the community and fuels further growth.

The global interest is palpable, with increasing American investor attention. Many venture capitalists from the U.S. have been visiting Stockholm to connect with founders and fund promising startups. As Bendz notes, this influx of investment is proof that Sweden’s approach to building tech companies is working, positioning the country as a leading innovation hub on the international stage.
