Why Disney’s ‘Endgame Encore’ Is Laser-Focused On Infinity Vision

Disney’s new Infinity Vision certification aims to elevate movie theater quality by ensuring venues use laser projection technology, which is often hard for viewers to verify. The certification program gained renewed attention with the release of Avengers: Endgame Encore, a version of the blockbuster featuring four additional minutes of footage and an updated, more vibrant color grade. By certifying theaters under Infinity Vision, Disney hopes to provide audiences with a clear indicator of premium viewing experiences, especially beneficial for formats like 4DX, which have historically relied on older, less vivid projection systems.

However, the program faces challenges around consistent enforcement of its standards. Infinity Vision requires theaters to have screens at least 45 feet wide, but some Cineworld 4DX theaters in the UK, branded as certified for Endgame Encore, reportedly do not meet this size requirement. This discrepancy casts doubt on whether other criteria, particularly the mandatory laser projection, are being strictly applied. Critics worry that without strict adherence, some marked theaters might not deliver the improved picture quality that is supposed to be a key benefit of the Infinity Vision label.

Despite these concerns, the Infinity Vision initiative has seen over 7,500 applications from cinemas worldwide seeking certification, suggesting a bullish trend toward upgrading projector technology. For Disney, the Endgame Encore re-release acts as a critical test for the program, banking on the certified theaters to showcase the film’s enhanced visuals effectively. The project also serves Disney’s broader strategy following the successful reception of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which performed well despite limited IMAX screenings, reinforcing confidence in Infinity Vision as a new standard for quality.

Looking ahead, Disney’s push behind Infinity Vision ties directly to the marketing and expected success of upcoming blockbusters like Avengers: Doomsday. By setting a high bar for theatrical presentation, Disney aims not only to improve the audience experience but also to create a recognizable brand that signifies premium cinema technology in a competitive market. The reception and performance of Endgame Encore thus hold critical implications for whether Infinity Vision will become an industry benchmark or fall short due to inconsistent implementation.
