The organization plans to invest millions of dollars into advertising campaigns aimed at influencing voters in these regions, where data center developments have become a contentious issue in local elections. Build American AI is linked to Leading the Future (LTF), a super PAC supported by prominent venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, along with OpenAI President Greg Brockman.

Leading the Future has gained significant attention and funding, with over $50 million committed toward supporting political candidates who favor AI development and opposing those who are critical of this technology. However, LTF’s aggressive tactics have drawn public criticism, including a June statement from OpenAI distancing itself from the super PAC's methods and calling for transparency and honesty in AI political advocacy. OpenAI emphasized disapproval of tactics like astroturfing, which can create a misleading impression of grassroots support.

Andreessen Horowitz has notably been a major political donor in this election cycle, contributing more than $115 million, surpassing high-profile individuals like Elon Musk and George Soros. The firm’s efforts encompass AI-friendly candidates and initiatives, along with backing pro-crypto measures via groups like the Fairshake PAC. The coalition of investors driving this includes some of Silicon Valley’s most influential figures, reflecting the broader push to shape policy around emerging technologies through political channels.

While LTF is one of the most visible AI-focused super PACs, other groups such as Public First Action, supported by Anthropic, advocate for AI regulation as an alternative approach. The heated political landscape around AI and data centers underscores the importance of these technologies in the upcoming midterm elections and highlights the growing intersection of tech industry interests and electoral politics in the United States.
