Paralympian Ali Truwit Wants You To Know We’re Stronger Than We Think

Paralympic swimmer Ali Truwit made an incredible comeback after losing part of her leg in a shark attack in 2023. Less than a year after the incident, she qualified for the U.S. Paralympic team and won two silver medals at Paris 2024 in the 100-meter backstroke and 400-meter freestyle events. Rather than stopping at her athletic achievements, Truwit has channeled her experience and resilience into creating the "Stronger Than You Think" foundation, aimed at empowering others facing adversity.

The foundation focuses on three main areas: water safety through swim lessons for underserved children, supporting the Paralympic movement, and providing prosthetics for women and girls. In under two years, "Stronger Than You Think" has supplied over 30 prosthetics and thousands of swim lessons, making a tangible impact on the communities it serves. Truwit's personal journey of regaining mobility with a prosthetic leg deeply informs her mission, as she knows firsthand how life-changing that access can be.

Truwit has also established a $500,000 performance incentive fund with the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Foundation to support U.S. Paralympic swimmers as they prepare for LA28. The fund rewards medalists and world record breakers financially to address the financial hardships many elite Paralympic athletes face, including the high cost of prosthetics. This bold investment aims to provide athletes with more stability and opportunity while encouraging greater achievement.

Beyond athletics and philanthropy, Truwit has launched a public speaking career, donating her fees to her foundation. She also started a baking company during her recovery to find joy and give back to those assisting her. Ali Truwit’s story is one of transforming personal tragedy into a broader legacy of hope, strength, and service, inspiring others to realize that they too are "stronger than they think."
