Bluecore Energy, a nuclear startup founded earlier this year by Kofi Asante, has quickly raised an impressive $50 million seed round just two months after launching publicly. This follows a prior $10 million pre-seed round, underscoring strong investor enthusiasm for its innovative approach to clean energy. The company develops small modular reactors (SMRs) mounted on floating barges, allowing portable nuclear power generation that can be transported to ports and nearby infrastructure in need of clean electricity.
The design is inspired by technology used by the U.S. Navy for decades, but Bluecore has miniaturized it to provide flexible deployment within days instead of years. Headquartered at the Port of Long Beach, the startup has already launched two floating barges and partnered with groups including the Department of Transportation's Maritime Division, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Bluecore is currently undergoing regulatory review with the NRC and Coast Guard to certify its floating nuclear power plants.
The new capital will support product development, regulatory processes, nuclear fuel acquisition, and team expansion. Asante emphasized the difficulty of matching supply chains to rapidly growing demand, especially in securing critical components, but the startup’s team includes talent from SpaceX, Rivian, and Toyota. There is significant interest from ports, AI data centers, and communities seeking clean energy and water solutions, aligning with Bluecore’s mission to democratize clean power access.
Asante expressed a vision where clean energy and water are seen as human rights and highlighted the potential broad impact of portable nuclear solutions. The company aims to tackle global clean energy challenges by enabling fast, flexible deployment of nuclear power where it is most urgently needed, setting Bluecore apart in the evolving clean energy landscape.
