Ford announces $1 billion investment at Kentucky plant following DOT criticism on China

Ford has revealed a $1 billion investment plan to build a new paint shop at its Kentucky Truck Plant, which is widely recognized as its most important and profitable manufacturing site. This plant produces some of Ford’s best-selling vehicles, including the F-250 to F-550 Super Duty trucks, as well as the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. The new paint facility is set to replace the existing one and enhance the operations at this key U.S. manufacturing hub, with construction starting later this year.

This announcement came shortly after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy raised significant concerns about Ford’s manufacturing integrity and its connections with Chinese companies. The Trump administration voiced apprehensions that these ties could pose risks to U.S. automotive interests and security. Ford responded by criticizing the remarks as a misguided attempt to garner media attention, reaffirming its commitment to American manufacturing leadership.

Paint shops are expensive and vital for vehicle production lines, and Ford’s investment to modernize its Kentucky facility underscores confidence in local manufacturing capabilities. CEO Jim Farley emphasized that the ongoing investments, which total around $4 billion in recent years for Kentucky alone, reflect both faith in the workforce and a dedication to building the future of mobility and energy domestically.

Following Ford’s rebuttal, the White House's Rapid Response team issued a positive statement the day after Duffy’s criticism, praising Ford as an exemplary American company. This sequence of events highlights the political sensitivity around U.S. manufacturing and supply chain integrity, as well as Ford’s efforts to maintain its position as a leading domestic automaker amid global economic and geopolitical pressures.
