NFL’s Roger Goodell is playing the international long game ahead of league’s Australia debut

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently secured a contract extension through 2031, allowing him to continue guiding the league’s future well beyond his current 20th season. During an exclusive CNBC interview in Melbourne ahead of the NFL’s inaugural regular-season game in Australia, Goodell emphasized the importance of long-term planning spanning five to fifteen years. This forward-looking mindset shapes decisions related to labor negotiations, media rights, stadiums, and especially the league’s international expansion.

This week’s milestone game between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams in Australia marks a key step in the NFL’s global growth strategy. Goodell revealed ambitious plans to increase international games from nine in 2026 to ten in 2027, with aspirations for up to sixteen eventually. However, the current collective bargaining agreement limits international contests to ten per season, and any further expansion will require player approval in future negotiations aligned with Goodell’s extended contract timeline.

Expanding the league’s fanbase globally involves more than just scheduling games abroad. Goodell outlined the NFL’s Global Markets Program, which assigns marketing rights of international regions to specific teams to foster sustainable engagement. He believes today’s players are accustomed to international travel and brand-building opportunities, which bodes well for the strategy. Still, the league aims to avoid a one-off spectacle approach, investing instead in ongoing events, media partnerships, and sponsorships to deepen ties with overseas audiences.

Looking further ahead, Commissioner Goodell envisions potential NFL franchises based outside the U.S., possibly establishing a European division with multiple teams competing weekly. While no timeline has been set for this expansion, it is part of a broader plan to evolve the business globally. The league is also broadening its media exposure worldwide, leveraging partners like Netflix to stream international games and increase accessibility, a critical aspect of its comprehensive approach to global growth.
