Kimi-maker Moonshot AI targets $2B in annual revenue

Chinese AI company Moonshot AI is aiming to significantly boost its revenue, targeting $2 billion in annualized sales by the end of 2026. This ambitious goal comes after the launch of its highly popular open-weight K3 model earlier this summer, which despite a slight dip in usage recently, still generates around 300 billion tokens daily according to OpenRouter data. The increase would double Moonshot’s revenue run rate reported in August, highlighting the strong market traction of the company’s AI offerings.

Moonshot AI, known for making its model weights freely accessible, operates with much lower profit margins compared to competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. These rival firms report annual revenues far exceeding Moonshot’s projections, at $40 billion and $65 billion respectively. Nevertheless, Moonshot's growth shows that open-weight AI models can still create substantial commercial value despite not commanding the same premium as closed, proprietary AI systems.

The company’s approach to developing K3 has generated controversy recently, with Anthropic accusing Moonshot AI of illicitly using its models to train K3. Anthropic alleges that Moonshot routed nearly 300,000 user requests from its Kimi app directly to Anthropic’s Claude Opus model, collecting over 23 million responses for Moonshot’s training purposes. This accusation points to ongoing tensions over intellectual property and data use in the competitive AI industry.

While Moonshot AI’s revenue ambitions signal its rise as a noteworthy player in China’s AI landscape, its lower margins and contentious development tactics reveal the challenges faced by open-weight models. As Moonshot pushes for rapid growth through its K3 technology, the company will need to navigate legal scrutiny and intensifying competition from powerful and better-funded U.S. AI firms aiming for dominance in global markets.
