Google has introduced early access to a new Model Context Protocol (MCP) server designed for the Google Home ecosystem, enabling AI agents such as Claude, ChatGPT, and others to interact directly with smart home devices. This update allows users to control connected devices, review camera activity summaries, monitor smart home events, and craft custom dashboards through natural language commands. It supports all devices within the Google Home ecosystem, including Google Nest products and Matter-compatible smart home gadgets.

To enable this integration, users will need to create a Google Cloud project and configure it to utilize the Home MCP server. After providing the relevant configuration details to their chosen AI agent, users will be prompted to sign in and grant permissions to facilitate secure control. Google is providing setup documentation via its Developer Center to assist users. The rollout of Home MCP access will initially target U.S. subscribers of the $20-per-month Google Home Premium Advanced plan, which offers enhanced video history, notifications, and search features.

The MCP server technology is not new to Google; it has been incorporated into other Google services such as Google Cloud, developer tools, and Google Workspace. However, the expansion into Google Home aims to empower consumers experimenting with AI agents for everyday smart home management tasks. While the current access is limited to premium subscribers in the U.S., Google has not disclosed broader rollout plans for other regions or subscription tiers. The company is actively collecting feedback from early testers via its Smart Home for Developers Community.
