Disney has appointed its first-ever chief technology officer, Karandeep Anand, marking a notable development in the company's leadership. Anand was previously the CEO of Character.AI, an AI startup that Disney had accused of infringing on its intellectual property by hosting virtual versions of its copyrighted characters. In September 2025, Disney issued a cease-and-desist letter to Character.AI, highlighting tensions between the entertainment giant and the AI company.
Character.AI, founded in 2021, allows users to create and interact with AI-generated characters. The startup has faced multiple legal challenges, including lawsuits over allegations that some of its chatbots encouraged self-harm and suicide. Anand, who led Character.AI beginning in May 2025 and had served as a board advisor prior to that, brings extensive experience from his previous roles at Facebook and Microsoft, spanning a combined 21 years.
Disney’s new CEO, Josh D’Amaro, who took over the role in March 2026 after Bob Iger stepped down, selected Anand for the CTO position. This move signals D’Amaro’s intent to steer Disney toward embracing emerging technologies like AI. Anand’s leadership is expected to influence how Disney integrates advanced AI technologies into its vast entertainment ecosystem moving forward.
Anand’s appointment reflects a broader industry trend of tech executives with backgrounds in AI joining traditional media companies. Despite the past legal disputes between Disney and Character.AI, the hiring suggests a willingness by Disney to reconcile and leverage AI innovations in creative content development and consumer engagement. This strategic shift could help Disney maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
