Kakao Entertainment, a major South Korean entertainment conglomerate, has entered into a strategic partnership with Atlantic Music Group, a division of Warner Music Group, aiming to broaden the global footprint of K-pop. This collaboration seeks to establish a pioneering business model focused on creating and nurturing new K-pop intellectual properties with international appeal. The deal underscores a growing trend of Korean entertainment companies joining forces with American music labels to accelerate global exposure for their artists, following similar moves by HYBE, JYP Entertainment, and WakeOne Entertainment with various U.S.-based counterparts.
Under Kakao’s extensive umbrella are renowned music labels such as EDAM Entertainment, Antenna, High Up Entertainment, BLUEDOT Entertainment, and Starship Entertainment, representing top artists including IU, WOODZ, Sam Kim, STAYC, MONSTA X, and IVE. Atlantic Music Group complements Kakao’s strength with its broad global reach and roster featuring big names like Bruno Mars, Cardi B, Coldplay, and Miley Cyrus. The partnership allows both entities to leverage their respective networks, expertise in artist development, marketing, and promotion to amplify the career trajectories of K-pop acts worldwide.
Joseph Chang, co-CEO of Kakao Entertainment, highlighted the significance of merging Kakao’s deep knowledge of the K-pop industry with Atlantic Music Group’s global market insights and promotional power. He emphasized their ambition to create new pathways enabling Korean artists to build enduring international success and expand K-pop’s presence beyond its current strongholds. Their joint efforts will encompass diverse areas such as global strategy formulation, music production, distribution, marketing campaigns, and promotional activities tailored to each artist’s unique style and stage of development.
Atlantic Music Group’s CEO Elliot Grainge also expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, praising Kakao Entertainment’s proven ability to connect artists with passionate audiences. The collaboration aims to combine Atlantic’s global influence and artist development capabilities with Kakao’s rich K-pop ecosystem to create sustainable, resonant careers for K-pop stars on a worldwide scale. A new K-pop label resulting from this venture is anticipated, promising innovative industry synergies and expanded opportunities in key international markets.
