Why Indie Artists Are Getting Off Social Media To Gain Fans

Indie musicians are increasingly moving away from relying solely on social media to build their fanbases, instead embracing traditional approaches like live shows, local radio, and word-of-mouth within close-knit music communities. The Chicago art-rock band Neptune’s Core exemplifies this strategy, choosing to focus on electrifying in-person performances, opening for established acts like Geese and Twin Peaks, and securing local radio play on stations such as WXRT. Their 2026 debut album, Pivot, released on Shuga Records, has garnered praise and helped them develop a growing audience beyond Chicago without aggressive social media tactics. The band’s members prioritize selling concert tickets over accumulating followers, emphasizing music over personality for lasting fan engagement.

Neptune’s Core leverages their strong ties with Chicago’s interconnected music scene, gaining visibility through mutual promotion with other artists and partnerships with photographers and creatives who lend credibility beyond what paid ads can achieve. They have found that being opening acts at shows is more effective for attracting new fans compared to headlining their own gigs, since they play to audiences already gathered for bigger names. In addition to live shows, they benefit from local press coverage and strategic placement on Spotify playlists like Daily Fresh Finds. While they do maintain some social media presence, including TikTok posts, they prefer it to complement rather than dominate their promotion efforts, using platforms mainly to invite fans to intimate DIY shows.

Other artists are also using social media differently by fostering personal, interactive experiences rather than chasing viral fame. For example, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Cristina Vane has cultivated a strong fan connection through Instagram Live performances, which became a vital tool during the pandemic and remain a way to invite fans into more private, informal music sessions. Early in her career, she organized a unique cross-country tour with her Instagram followers’ help, leading to shows in venues ranging from backyards to clubs. This use of social media to create intimate moments offers a modern twist on community-building, emphasizing quality interactions over quantity of followers.

Even top-tier stars like Cardi B and Kehlani have embraced face-to-face fan engagement by organizing album release events at independent record stores, generating excitement with meet-and-greet opportunities tied to album sales. These personal appearances not only deepen fan loyalty but also boost commercial success through direct interaction and media buzz. For emerging bands like Neptune’s Core, balancing college and high school commitments with touring and recording remains challenging, but their commitment to live music and authentic connection shows that old-school strategies remain highly effective in cultivating dedicated audiences in today’s music industry landscape.
