Character.AI enters the microdrama arena with its own productions, but there’s a twist

Character.AI has ventured into the popular microdrama space by producing its own AI-driven episodic series, but with a unique interactive element. Launching three initial shows—“Last Summer” (romance), “The Nighttime Game” (horror), and “Eden Fall” (a survival drama akin to Hunger Games)—the company enables users aged 18 and above not only to watch but also to engage directly with the characters. Fans can chat with these AI personas, ask questions, and explore alternate plotlines through roleplay, leveraging Character.AI’s core chat avatar technology for a more immersive storytelling experience.

These microdramas are created using AI production tools, and Character.AI plans to evolve from producing content in-house to providing users with tools to create their own AI character-driven series. According to a company spokesperson, the current studio-led phase will help refine production workflows and understand audience preferences. Over time, the startup aims to democratize microdrama creation by empowering its global user base to invent and share original shows featuring personalized AI characters.

This push into AI-centric entertainment builds on Character.AI’s shift toward interactive content, following last year’s introduction of features like Lorebook—enabling detailed world-building—and Books, which allows users to insert themselves into classic literature and roleplay as characters. Recently, Character.AI also began experimenting with audio series creation tools under its c.ai Labs program, aimed at supporting serialized audio dramas crafted by professional writers, alongside c.ai Reads for fiction writing.

The company’s move taps into a booming market, where microdramas are rapidly growing in popularity across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and streaming services worldwide. During the first half of 2026, users spent over 950 minutes monthly on Character.AI on average, indicating strong engagement potential. By integrating interactive AI-driven storytelling with personalized user involvement, Character.AI aims to redefine how audiences experience serialized narratives and foster creative participation in digital entertainment.
