Northwestern’s New Ryan Field Showcases David Rockwell’s Hospitality

Northwestern University’s newly opened Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois, marks a significant evolution in stadium design by seamlessly integrating hospitality and local culture, thanks to the vision of David Rockwell and his Rockwell Group. Celebrating 40 years of expertise in restaurant and theater design, Rockwell extended his talent to sports venues, beginning in the late 1990s at Turner Field and continuing across the country. At Ryan Field, the firm crafted three premium clubs and two grand halls within the 35,000-seat stadium, focusing on creating communal gathering spaces that connect fans with the live game-day ritual and university pride.

The three hospitality spaces—the Field Club, Northwestern Club, and East Club—exemplify Rockwell’s design philosophy by offering diverse yet cohesive experiences. Positioned behind the end zone, the Field Club is a vibrant, gastro pub-inspired area where devoted Wildcats fans get an intimate, on-the-turf connection with players, surrounded by rich materials like distressed oak and reclaimed brick along with historic memorabilia. The Northwestern Club combines classic bar elegance and park views with wooden parquet floors, vintage lighting, and artwork from university archives. The East Club, modeled on a contemporary loft, features indoor-outdoor flexibility, high-end finishes, and Chicago’s industrial aesthetic, making it ideal for events and celebrations.

Rockwell emphasizes the importance of blending effective circulation and hospitality to meet the unique demands of sports fans, who seek quick service without missing the action. Working with architects HNTB and Perkins&Will, the design balances multiple hospitality layers in a way that complements rather than detracts from the game. Wide concourses lined with retail and street-like storefronts enhance movement and create a welcoming atmosphere while keeping the focus on the field, echoing Rockwell’s belief that stadiums should animate their communities rather than isolate them.

Ryan Field’s hospitality spaces continue a broader trend seen in projects like Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium for the F1 race and Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena, where Rockwell Group’s design aims to create striking, memorable experiences. Rockwell asserts that successful stadium design offers great sightlines and varied food options, distinguishing the experience from other entertainment venues. Ultimately, his work at Northwestern underscores how thoughtful architecture and hospitality design can foster shared celebrations and forge lasting memories for fans.
