NFL Week 6 Stories: How Long Can Chiefs, 49ers, Vikings Stay Unbeaten?

Through the first five weeks of the 2026 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, and San Francisco 49ers stand as the only unbeaten teams. The 49ers and Chiefs have experienced similar strong starts in recent years, with the 49ers having started 5-0 three times in the last four years, yet they have lost their sixth game each time. The Chiefs, under Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, have begun 4-0 or better five times, including this season. The Vikings, on the other hand, are new to this territory and benefit from a Week 6 bye before facing the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7.

Minnesota’s defense has been exceptional, ranking near the top of the league in key defensive metrics such as sacks and points allowed. However, quarterback instability has persisted with Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz sharing duties, and the team trading former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy to the Giants. Despite the revolving door at quarterback and modest offensive stats, the Vikings remain unbeaten so far, seeking to avoid the playoff misses that followed similar strong 5-0 starts in 2003 and 2016.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young has emerged as a standout offensive player, leading the NFL with an average of 317 passing yards per game. Though the Panthers hold a 2-2 record and face challenges on defense, Young’s performance has been a key bright spot. He has consistently delivered over 260 passing yards in six consecutive games dating back to last season and ranks high in total passing yards and touchdowns this year. Young’s dynamic play gives Carolina hope in the competitive NFC South.

While the Vikings and 49ers boast strong defenses, other contenders like the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, and Baltimore Ravens face difficulties defensively, allowing high points and yards despite winning games. These defensive struggles could pressure their offenses and impact postseason success. Additionally, three NFL teams are still winless and five have only one victory through five weeks, signaling ongoing quarterback and roster issues and suggesting a tough path for many franchises in the 2026 season.
