On Expansion, NWSL Told Arthur Blank ‘Let Us Know When You’re Ready’

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) officially awarded an expansion franchise to Arthur Blank and the city of Atlanta last November, bringing the 17th club into the league under the name Atlanta City FC. NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman emphasized that the decision to award the expansion was a matter of timing rather than if, highlighting Blank’s patience and leadership throughout the process. Atlanta City FC will join alongside an impending 18th club in Columbus, Ohio, marking a notable phase of rapid growth for the league.

Blank’s reputation as a respected sports owner, known for his genuine community focus and strong fan engagement, played a crucial role in the league’s expansion approach. His stewardship of Atlanta United in Major League Soccer (MLS) set a high standard, demonstrating consistent investment in team quality and fan experience, which has translated into strong attendance despite on-field challenges. Berman praised Blank and his family for their reliability and commitment, recognizing their ability to go beyond promises and build deep, generational support among fans.

Shortly before the expansion announcement, U.S. Soccer unveiled the Arthur M. Blank Crest Cup, a new competition reflecting the tradition of the historic U.S. Open Cup, named in honor of Blank’s significant contributions. He also made a $50 million gift towards the construction of U.S. Soccer’s $250 million national training facility in suburban Atlanta, which opened in May. These investments position Atlanta as a growing hub for American soccer development at all levels.

The NWSL’s expansion trajectory mirrors the growth path of MLS, moving from contraction struggles to rapidly expanding teams and market presence. Berman highlighted the strategic challenge ahead: increasing awareness of the league’s stars beyond household names like Trinity Rodman to build a broader fan base. With the 2031 Women’s World Cup looming, the league hopes to establish a new generation of recognizable players and expand its footprint significantly, leveraging the momentum created by key figures like Blank and the growing enthusiasm for women’s soccer nationwide.
