Reggie Miller Reacts To Knicks Pausing KAT, Josh Hart Extension Talks: ‘I Hope It’s Not A Distraction’

Reggie Miller expressed concern about the New York Knicks pausing contract extension talks for star players Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart, urging the team to avoid distractions during their championship-contending window. The Knicks recently announced a halt in extension discussions for all players, including Towns and Hart, key contributors to their first NBA title in 53 years. Miller, speaking on a media call, emphasized the importance of seizing the current moment given the team’s veteran leadership, coaching depth, and championship experience.

Miller noted that while the team has decided to pause public talks to reduce media pressure on players, negotiations could still continue privately. The Knicks are mindful of the NBA’s salary cap constraints, as signing Towns to a full maximum deal could push the franchise beyond the second apron salary threshold. Towns, who helped lead the Knicks to their 2026 championship, reportedly was offered around $200 million on an extension, short of the $276 million he could command.

Josh Hart, who also played a crucial role in the Knicks’ championship run, has a team option for over $22 million next season and remains optimistic about resolving contract issues without them interfering with the season. Miller trusts team captain Jalen Brunson to keep the squad focused as they defend their title, highlighting the team's depth and cohesion under coach Mike Brown. Both Miller and former Knicks player-turned-analyst Jamal Crawford hope the contract dispute does not sidetrack the team’s pursuit of further success.

The Knicks will start their 2026-27 NBA season at Madison Square Garden against the Philadelphia 76ers on “Ring Night,” a game that will be nationally televised. Despite the ongoing contract saga, confidence remains high that the Knicks’ core group of players understands the urgency of maintaining their championship form. Both former players and insiders expect Towns, Hart, and the entire roster to prioritize winning while any contract talk evolves quietly in the background throughout the year.
