Kawhi Leonard Trade on Hold Until NBA Wraps Clippers Investigation

Kawhi Leonard's anticipated trade back to the Toronto Raptors has been paused amid an ongoing NBA investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers. The league is probing allegations that the Clippers tried to circumvent the salary cap by funneling money to Leonard through a failed environmental startup called Aspiration. This investigation began last September and could lead to severe penalties for the Clippers, including fines, loss of draft picks, and potential nullification of Leonard’s contract.

Both the Raptors and Clippers announced jointly that the trade would not proceed until the NBA completes its inquiry. The Raptors released a statement acknowledging they would take on the risk of any negative fallout affecting Leonard, emphasizing their desire for a swift resolution. The delay also stalls contract extension talks between Leonard and Toronto, which were set to start following the trade's completion.

Leonard is in the final year of a $150 million extension signed in 2024, with a $50.3 million salary due for the upcoming season. He also holds extension eligibility for another two years potentially worth $123.7 million. The Clippers and key figures including owner Steve Ballmer and Leonard himself have cooperated extensively with investigators, providing thousands of documents and participating in numerous interviews.

Commissioner Adam Silver described the situation as “enormously complex,” citing the bankruptcy case of Aspiration and the vast volume of evidence under review. While the Clippers firmly deny any wrongdoing, asserting that money was not funneled to Leonard via Aspiration, the NBA is expected to conclude its findings in the coming weeks. The Raptors remain hopeful the trade will eventually be completed once the investigation ends.
