Bedrock Robotics, a startup specializing in autonomous vehicle technology, has secured $600 million in a Series C funding round, pushing its valuation to $4.1 billion. Founded in 2024 by experienced engineers from Waymo and other robotics firms, Bedrock has already transitioned from pilot testing to commercial deployment of its self-driving excavators. These autonomous machines are currently in operation at various job sites, including a Nevada water treatment facility and major earthwork projects in Texas, demonstrating practical use alongside human crews in real-world construction environments.
The company's proprietary technology is a retrofit kit that transforms existing construction vehicles, particularly excavators, into autonomous units. Bedrock focuses on excavators due to the growing scarcity of skilled operators, a trend driven by an aging workforce with more than 40% of construction workers projected to retire within the next five years, according to industry data. By automating these machines, Bedrock aims to fill a critical labor gap and improve efficiency on construction projects.
The new funding round is led by CapitalG and Emergence Capital and includes participation from existing and new investors like US Innovative Technology Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Temasek. The fresh capital will accelerate Bedrock’s expansion into more construction sites and bolster the company's support infrastructure to better serve its growing customer base. Bedrock also recently added Amy Jones Satrom, with a background at Amazon and Uber, as VP of operations, and Lando Juarez, formerly Uber’s autonomous business legal lead, as general counsel.
Bedrock’s CEO and co-founder Boris Sofman, who previously headed Waymo’s autonomous truck program, emphasizes the importance of delivering dependable autonomous excavation to contractors across the industry. The startup’s autonomous excavators are already being adopted by partners like Haydon, a general contractor in Arizona, for diverse projects including manufacturing and healthcare facilities. As Bedrock scales, it plans to continue addressing the skilled labor shortage in construction through its advanced autonomous driving solutions.
