Jay-Z Extends His Super Bowl History As 2027 Halftime Headliner

Jay-Z has been announced as the headliner for the Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show, which will take place on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Following the record-breaking 2026 halftime performance by Bad Bunny, the expectations for the 2027 show are very high. Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, will executive produce the event, and Hamish Hamilton, a longtime director of the broadcast, will return to direct. No additional performers or guest appearances have been revealed yet.

The selection of Jay-Z as the headliner is directly tied to Roc Nation’s ongoing partnership with the NFL, which began in 2019. As the league’s live music entertainment strategist and co-producer of the halftime show, Roc Nation holds significant influence over the choice of performers, giving Jay-Z effective authority in this decision. This marks the eighth halftime show produced by Roc Nation under the renewed partnership agreement announced in October 2024. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had expressed from the outset that Jay-Z himself should perform when the timing felt right.

Jay-Z’s history with the Super Bowl halftime show and the NFL extends beyond just producing. Initially, he declined earlier offers to perform on principle, specifically resisting conditions about which guest artists he should include. Notably, he turned down a proposed slot when asked to perform alongside Kanye West and Rihanna on the track "Run This Town." His stance underscored that any decision about his performance should be his own. The 2027 announcement signals that Jay-Z views this moment as a milestone in his career, reflecting on a three-decade journey in music and culture.

Under Roc Nation’s stewardship, the halftime show has increasingly spotlighted hip-hop and R&B artists, including Shakira and Jennifer Lopez in 2020, The Weeknd in 2021, and Kendrick Lamar in 2025. Given Jay-Z’s prolific career—he is the second-most nominated artist in Grammy history with 89 nominations—and his partnership status, he has chosen himself for this key performance slot. Speculation remains about potential guest performers, with names like Beyoncé mentioned as possibilities, though nothing official has been confirmed yet.
