Binance reported a significant security incident on Friday, estimating the impact at $6.3 billion, with approximately $3 billion in cryptocurrency assets currently frozen. The incident reportedly involved a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which may have allowed an attacker to access a service container and execute unauthorized withdrawals. Binance pledged to cover all losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds, while emphasizing that customer funds remained safe. As part of the response, the exchange temporarily halted deposits and withdrawals, revoked permissions for the affected address, and engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence teams to track and recover the stolen assets.
In the wake of the attack, major crypto companies including Circle Internet Group, Tether, and Ripple moved quickly to freeze funds related to the breach. Circle has reportedly frozen more than $800 million in USD Coin linked to the potential exploit, and Tether locked down over $1.5 billion of its USDT stablecoin. Ripple also halted movement of $200 million in funds associated with its RLUSD stablecoin, a process supported by Binance co-founder Yi He. Despite these substantial freezes, experts suspect this may represent only a portion of the total digital assets affected by the exploit.
The incident had an immediate impact on cryptocurrency markets, with Bitcoin prices dropping more than 4% to just under $78,000 amid growing investor concerns. Shares of Circle tumbled about 5% in trading following the news. Binance further announced the temporary suspension of its Binance Alpha trading platform and planned to publish a detailed technical report and updated Proof of Reserves once remediation efforts are complete. The exchange continues investigating the full scope of the incident, noting no current evidence of private key leaks.
Blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence has linked nearly $6 billion in digital assets—including bitcoin, ether, solana, and various stablecoins—to 55 wallet addresses connected with the exploit. Despite growing instances of hacks in the crypto space, such as the 2025 Bybit hack resulting in $1.5 billion in losses and recent thefts from platforms like Bitget, Binance’s swift action and promise to cover losses underscore ongoing challenges and resilience efforts within the industry.
