Rivian and Volkswagen Group have broadened their $5.8 billion joint venture to now include Rivian's AI voice assistant technology. This expansion, revealed in Rivian’s third-quarter investor presentation, marks a new phase where Volkswagen will license parts of Rivian’s in-house AI assistant as a component of their electric vehicle offerings. Although details on licensing fees and specific Volkswagen models adopting the AI assistant remain undisclosed, the technology is expected to debut in VW’s upcoming affordable electric hatchback, the ID EVERY1, which already relies on Rivian’s software and electrical systems.
The collaborative joint venture, initially valued up to $5 billion and later increased to $5.8 billion by 2027, began in November 2024 with a focus on Rivian’s electrical architecture and software foundations for Volkswagen’s next generation of vehicles. Incorporating AI assistant technology into this partnership underscores the adaptability and extensibility of Rivian’s platform, which the automaker developed over two years before launching it in 2026 on its own flagship models, including the R1S SUV, R1T pickup, and the midsize R2 SUV.
Rivian’s AI assistant enables intuitive interaction between occupants and the vehicle, controlling functions via natural language. CEO RJ Scaringe has highlighted that their proprietary AI-driven agentic framework can interpret user intentions and direct them to the correct vehicle systems. This sophisticated AI integration aligns with Rivian’s broader strategy of vertical integration, giving the company comprehensive control over both hardware and software to swiftly implement over-the-air updates and enhance user experience.
The move also reflects Volkswagen's growing commitment to modernizing its EV offerings with advanced software capabilities, an area where it has faced challenges compared to rivals like Tesla. Rivian’s streamlined vehicle architecture, which reduces electronic control units significantly while accommodating higher computational demands, was a key factor in attracting Volkswagen’s investment and partnership. By embedding Rivian’s AI assistant in Volkswagen’s EV lineup, both companies aim to deliver competitive, software-rich electric vehicles to a broader market.
