Anduril, Qualcomm launch BlueChip, a new kind of US-made laptop

Anduril, led by founder Palmer Luckey, has teamed up with Qualcomm to launch BlueChip, a laptop designed to be nearly entirely made in the United States or allied countries. The initiative aims to bring full computer manufacturing—including all components, some currently sourced only from China—back to the U.S. BlueChip will feature a Snapdragon X Series CPU produced at TSMC's Arizona facility, with an overall bill of materials currently about 90% American or allied-made, with plans to reach 100% domestic content in the future.

The BlueChip laptop will cater primarily to military, government, first responders, and law enforcement customers that require rugged, secure devices. Engineered to endure harsh environments, it boasts features to resist water, dust, and physical damage. While consumers can preorder BlueChip starting in 2027, the company warns that this first generation isn’t optimized for general consumer use due to weight and battery trade-offs inherent in its tough design.

One of BlueChip’s standout features is its transparent and fully auditable supply chain, offering users unprecedented control over every hardware and software component. The laptop is optimized to run Windows applications, Linux distros favored by government agencies, and legacy software still in use, ensuring broad compatibility for its primary audience. Luckey foresees the product addressing government regulations that demand the purchase of domestically made technology and aims to build trust by offering full visibility into the device's components.

While pricing details are still under wraps, Luckey projects BlueChip will cost about 20% more than typical premium laptops due to the specialized manufacturing process. He hopes to expand the line of BlueChip computers over time to be more accessible to consumers who value American-made products. Despite challenges competing with China’s well-established electronics manufacturing, Luckey remains committed and optimistic that BlueChip can spearhead a return of U.S.-based computer production, tapping into a growing $5 billion market for ruggedized military-grade computers.
