Delta expects higher airfare to last, bringing 2026 profit goal in reach, CEO says

Delta Air Lines reported stronger-than-expected earnings for the second quarter of 2026, with adjusted earnings per share of $1.56 surpassing Wall Street estimates of $1.48. Revenue also exceeded projections, coming in at $17.67 billion. The company’s CEO, Ed Bastian, emphasized that the airline’s profitability target for 2026 remains achievable due to ongoing pricing power, especially as Delta continues passing higher fuel costs on to customers amid robust demand.

Bastian highlighted that, despite recent declines in fuel prices from multi-year peaks, Delta expects airfares to remain elevated. This firmness in fares stems from healthy travel demand, a broader mix of seating options, and a disciplined approach by airlines to capacity growth that prevents rapid expansion of supply when fuel costs fall. For the third quarter, Delta anticipates earnings per share between $2.00 and $2.50, with revenues expected to increase in the mid-teens compared to the same period in 2025.

Premium seating continued to be a significant revenue driver for Delta, contributing $6.92 billion in sales, slightly outpacing main cabin revenue of $6.85 billion for the quarter. Bastian noted that demand from high-income travelers remains strong as the airline caters to a "K-shaped" economic recovery, with corporate travel gaining momentum in industries such as aerospace, defense, banking, and automotive. Additionally, the airline saw higher-than-expected interest linked to the World Cup, including inbound visitors to the U.S.

Operational costs rose due to elevated fuel expenses, with Delta passing along about 60% of this increase to customers during the quarter, expecting to reach near 100% in the upcoming months. The airline’s refinery business in Pennsylvania was a bright spot, with revenues soaring 83% to $2.09 billion. Although net income fell 25% year-over-year to $1.6 billion, the carrier’s overall revenue climbed 19%. These results reflect a strategic balance of managing costs while capitalizing on strong market demand.
