Kansas City Royals Prospect Justin Lamkin Back On Road To Success

Kansas City Royals left-handed pitching prospect Justin Lamkin is making a strong comeback after a shoulder injury disrupted his 2026 season. Diagnosed with a left shoulder impingement and strain in May, Lamkin was sidelined until October, when he began pitching in the Arizona Fall League for the Surprise Saguaros. In this stint, he showed promising form, recording a 3-1 record across four starts with 14 strikeouts in just over 15 innings, complementing his solid pre-injury stats of a 3-1 record and 2.04 ERA in nearly 40 innings at High-A Quad Cities and Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Lamkin’s 2026 season started with impressive performances, including a 2-0 record and a low 1.27 ERA in six starts for Quad Cities. Despite the injury setback, his command and strikeout ability remained evident as he fanned 53 batters across those 39.2 innings before May. His pitching repertoire includes a fastball in the low 90s, a sharp slider, and a deceptive changeup, and during the fall, he has been developing a new curveball to expand his arsenal, aiming to become a more versatile and effective pitcher.

Lamkin’s baseball journey began in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he dominated at Calallen High School with multiple no-hitters and remarkable strikeout numbers. He moved on to Texas A&M, where his performance was more mixed but capped by a standout final season, including a complete game shutout with 15 strikeouts against a top 10-ranked Georgia team. The Royals saw his potential and selected him in the second round of the 2025 MLB Draft at No. 71 overall, a spot that has historically produced quality pitching talent.

Looking ahead, Lamkin’s progress with his curveball and his recovery from injury position him well for a shot at the majors in the near future. Despite the possibility of a 2027 MLB lockout, minor league games are expected to continue, providing him vital innings and experience. The Royals organization remains hopeful about Lamkin’s ability to compete for a big-league role, joining a promising group of pitching prospects including top-ranked Kendry Chourio and lefty David Shields.
