The film *Primetime*, featuring Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen, the former *To Catch a Predator* host, transitions to digital streaming this week. Directed by Lance Oppenheim, the R-rated movie debuted at the Venice International Film Festival on September 5 and later opened in theaters on September 25. Hansen was not involved in the film’s production and refused a preview screening after being asked to sign a restrictive non-disclosure agreement. After seeing it on opening day, Hansen described the film as disconnected from reality and questioned its purpose.
Despite his criticisms, Hansen recently extended an open invitation to Pattinson for an in-depth podcast interview. On the October 28 episode of his show *Have a Seat with Chris Hansen*, Hansen expressed interest in having Pattinson on to discuss the movie and his acting career. This marks a shift for Hansen, who had previously declined to engage with the actor or comment positively on the film’s portrayal of him. Pattinson had earlier acknowledged on *Deadline* that he admired Hansen and sought to make him appear “cool” in *Primetime*.
*Primetime* will be available on premium video on demand starting November 3, priced at $24.99 for purchase or around $19.99 to rent for 48 hours, via platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube Movies & TV. The storyline begins in 2006, chronicling Hansen’s rise to fame with NBC’s *To Catch a Predator* segments that exposed suspected child predators using hidden cameras. The documentary-style series faced controversy and ended in 2008, following the suicide of a suspect who was being arrested.
The film also stars Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Alex Winter, Bokeem Woodbine, and Phoebe Bridgers. With Oppenheim’s direction, known for his work on the Elizabeth Holmes documentary *You Can See Everything*, *Primetime* garnered strong critical praise at its Venice premiere, despite Hansen’s disapproval. The digital release is expected to expand its audience beyond the festival and theatrical run, marking a significant moment in the ongoing conversation around Hansen’s controversial role in reality and in cinema.
