Lakers’ Jeanie Buss: Siblings Attempted ‘False-Flag Operation”

Los Angeles Lakers governor Jeanie Buss has filed a legal complaint accusing her five siblings of orchestrating a "false-flag operation" related to the family’s sale of franchise shares. She seeks to prevent her siblings—Jesse, Joey, Janie, and Jim—from selling their collective 17.8% minority stake in the Buss Family Trust. Such a sale would cause Jeanie to lose her status as controlling owner, a role that under NBA rules requires holding at least a 15% share. The filing claims her siblings' behind-the-scenes maneuvers, including undisclosed votes and media leaks, were an attempt to undermine her authority.

Jeanie Buss played a central role in negotiating the family’s majority stock sale to Mark Walter in 2025, which valued the Lakers at $10 billion. This deal secured her continuation as controlling owner and governor for five years, an arrangement that was upheld despite opposition from some siblings advocating for a lower valuation or different ownership arrangements. After Walter sold his majority stake to venture capitalist Joshua Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger for $12.5 billion in 2026, Jeanie and minority investors expressed enthusiasm about being part of the new ownership structure moving forward.

The lawsuit references a 2017 court order that affirmed Jeanie Buss as the Lakers’ controlling owner for life, stating no sale or transfer during her lifetime could remove that designation. Jeanie’s lawyers argue this order should apply to the current co-trustees, reinforcing her legal standing against her siblings’ attempted sale. The dispute follows a prior filing by the siblings aimed at blocking Jeanie from removing them as co-trustees of the family trust, reflecting ongoing tensions within the Buss family since the death of their father, former Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss, in 2013.

Dr. Jerry Buss originally appointed Jeanie as team governor and Jim as head of basketball operations, intentions that have intensified the sibling rivalry over control and ownership. Jeanie’s legal team accuses her siblings of being unable to accept her leadership role as dictated by their parents’ trusts. They emphasize Jeanie’s commitment has been to uphold the family’s legacy and grow the franchise’s value for fans and relatives alike. A hearing on this complex family and business conflict is scheduled for December 8.
