Netflix has launched a new anime series titled Bass X Machina, which has quickly garnered exceptional critical acclaim, earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes from available reviews. The show features an impressive cast including Brian Tyree Henry as a reimagined version of historical figure Bass Reeves, alongside musician Janelle Monáe and actress Tati Gabrielle. Bass X Machina blends science fiction and the Steampunk Western genre in a unique narrative centered on a father who must enforce justice in a chaotic world filled with outlaws, machines, and supernatural dangers.

Produced by South Korean studio Mir, known for their work on acclaimed series such as The Legend of Korra and The Boondocks, the animation quality and cultural scope are high points noted by early critics. Mir’s past projects also include Harley Quinn, My Adventures with Superman, and X-Men ’97, establishing the studio’s reputation within the animation industry. Despite some similarities to previous shows like Devil May Cry, Bass X Machina represents a fresh creative direction and is not associated with Devil May Cry’s creator.

Though newly released with just six episodes of roughly 30 minutes each, the series has been praised for its style and storytelling depth, with outlets like Geek Girl Riot and Screen Rant highlighting its fusion of anime inspiration and cultural themes. The short season makes it an accessible binge-watch, with the potential for an extended run depending on viewer reception. Netflix audiences will learn its ranking on top 10 lists once more viewership data becomes available in the coming days.

The series is not marketed as a miniseries, indicating Netflix’s hopes for a strong performance that could lead to a second season. The show’s blend of historical reimagining, genre fusion, and notable talent involvement positions it as one of Netflix’s standout anime releases in 2026. With accolades rolling in early, Bass X Machina could soon become a significant player in the platform’s animated lineup and a major draw for sci-fi and anime fans alike.
