Foster + Partners and Manica have unveiled plans for the Generali Stadium in Milan, which will replace the century-old San Siro stadium. Scheduled to open around 2031, this new 71,500-seat venue will serve as the home ground for both AC Milan and Inter Milan, continuing a storied football rivalry that began with the original San Siro’s first match in 1926. The Generali Stadium is envisioned as a centerpiece of a broader 70-acre urban development, blending residential and fan-focused spaces to enhance the city’s cultural landscape.
The architectural design is inspired by Milan’s rich heritage, featuring distinctive concrete X-frame structures that integrate ventilated colonnades and support a double-curved roof embedded with photovoltaic technology. This roof will visually highlight the two iconic "curvas"—curved terraces familiar to both clubs’ fans—while also offering acoustically optimized sound for an immersive game-day atmosphere. The stadium’s continuous 360-degree bowl design brings fans closer to the action, with steep seating tiers angled at 37 degrees to amplify energy and sightlines.
Norman Foster of Foster + Partners emphasized the stadium’s role as a year-round destination and cultural landmark, aiming to honor San Siro’s legacy while advancing Milan’s urban regeneration. The venue’s design includes diamond-shaped entrances leading to concourses with panoramic city views, reflecting a thoughtful blend of tradition and modernity. The architects emphasized fan experience, accessibility, and circulation, aiming to create a dynamic urban hub intimately connected with Milan’s identity.
Construction for the Generali Stadium is expected to begin in 2028, with the first match anticipated for the 2031/32 season. The two clubs purchased San Siro from the city in 2025 to drive this transformation, signaling a major investment in Milan’s sporting future. David Manica, president of Manica, highlighted the stadium’s potential to redefine football experience in Milan by balancing its historic passion with contemporary design excellence.
