Trump tells CNBC he can work with Dems on ‘many more things than people understand’

President Donald Trump expressed to CNBC his belief that he can collaborate with the incoming Democratic-controlled Congress on various financial and policy issues, even as he drew firm lines on topics like immigration and sports regulations involving transgender athletes. This came after the 2026 midterm elections, where Democrats flipped both the House and Senate, capturing at least 250 House seats and securing a Senate majority with at least 54 seats. Despite the GOP's crushing losses, Trump focused publicly on construction projects in the White House, including a new ballroom and helipad, rather than dwelling on the electoral setback in his initial remarks.

The election outcomes signify a substantial shift in political power, with Democrats gaining control over Congress and picking up key governorships, notably in Texas and Georgia. Democrats also made historic firsts, electing the first Muslim senator, Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, as well as a record number of female and Black governors. Voters, according to polls, were primarily motivated by economic concerns such as inflation and the rising cost of living, which many attribute to policies under the Trump administration and the impact of the ongoing war in Iran—a conflict Vice President JD Vance and Trump himself accepted as a significant factor behind the GOP's losses.

Going forward, Democratic leaders like House Speaker-elect Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have indicated plans for aggressive legislative action aimed at improving affordability, healthcare, and corporate accountability, while also preparing investigations into the Trump administration and its allies. However, Trump has vowed to use his veto power against what he describes as "insane" bills from the Democrats, setting the stage for political gridlock. Analysts highlight the upcoming debt ceiling debate as a crucial conflict that could test both parties and influence financial market volatility.

The election's political and economic ramifications extend to major industries and investors. Tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon saw stock gains amid expectations of a more stable regulatory environment, while artificial intelligence and data center-related companies faced setbacks due to voters opposing rapid AI infrastructure expansion. Elon Musk’s substantial campaign investments, particularly in Texas where his favored Republican candidates were defeated, suffered a notable blow, reflecting broader voter pushback against Silicon Valley donors. Overall, the electoral sweep represents a rebuke of the Trump presidency and shifts the balance of power in Washington for the remainder of his term.
