Voters say the economy drove them to the polls — and blame Trump for their troubles

In the 2026 midterm elections, Democrats achieved significant victories, reclaiming control of both the House and Senate and overturning multiple battleground congressional seats and traditionally Republican governorships. The decisive factor driving voter turnout was widespread economic dissatisfaction, particularly concerns about inflation and the cost of living. According to the CNBC Voter Poll, nearly 90% of voters identified the economy as a major influence in their decision, with a majority rating economic conditions as poor and expressing that their financial situation had worsened over the past two years.

Much of the economic discontent was attributed to policies under President Donald Trump’s administration. Roughly two-thirds of voters in the poll blamed Trump’s policies for deteriorating economic conditions, citing inflation exacerbated by the ongoing war with Iran, which contributed to higher energy prices, including record gas prices on election day. The conflict also added nearly $2,200 in expenses per household through increased energy costs and military spending, further straining American families’ budgets. This economic pressure played a critical role in shaping voter attitudes and electoral outcomes.

The war with Iran was another significant issue influencing voter behavior, with nearly three-quarters saying it was an important factor in their votes. Although some voters supported the military action in principle, many were frustrated by its economic consequences, particularly rising fuel prices and inflationary pressures. Vice President JD Vance acknowledged that the war likely swayed some former Trump supporters to back Democrats in the midterms, highlighting the conflict’s political ramifications amid domestic economic hardships.

Beyond the war and inflation, Trump’s economic strategies, including his tariff policies and aggressive immigration enforcement, were met with voter criticism. The tariffs disrupted markets and raised consumer prices, while immigration crackdowns hurt local economies in major cities. Despite some popular initiatives like increased tax refunds and new savings accounts for children, voters ultimately signaled a preference for Democratic leadership to address economic challenges. However, skepticism remains, with many believing the current economic system favors the wealthy and expecting Democrats to tackle these systemic concerns in the years ahead.
