Harbinger, the Los Angeles-based electric truck startup, has secured $240 million in a Series D funding round as it broadens its product lineup to include battery storage solutions and defense applications. This latest round comes nearly a year after a $160 million Series C, which featured an initial order from FedEx. With this round, Harbinger has now raised over $650 million since its founding in 2022.
The $240 million Series D was co-led by Tiger Global, Capricorn’s technology impact fund, and the defense-focused Ridgeline. FedEx, a key partner, participated again and continues to deepen its involvement, exemplified by senior executive Paul Melander joining Harbinger’s board. Recent developments include FedEx’s substantial order for 2,000 electric trucks valued at more than $300 million, underscoring a growing strategic relationship.
Founded by former employees of EV startup Canoo and battery company QuantumScape, Harbinger initially concentrated on building a single electric truck chassis. However, it has rapidly expanded into new areas by acquiring autonomous driving firm Phantom AI, starting work on hybrid emergency vehicles, and unveiling a driverless hybrid electric platform tailored for military use.
The company’s evolving portfolio and strengthened backing from investors like Fidelity Management hint at plans to eventually go public. Harbinger’s strategic moves position it not only as a player in commercial electric vehicles but also as a significant contender in defense-related mobility solutions, boosting its profile in both civilian and government sectors.
