Instagram has expanded its Edits video editing app to Mac desktops, aiming to better serve creators with more demanding projects that benefit from a larger screen, keyboard, and mouse. This move directly competes with ByteDance’s CapCut, which has dominated as a video-editing tool for creators on desktop since 2021. Instagram originally launched Edits last year to challenge CapCut’s popularity in the mobile editing space.
The desktop version of Edits includes a broad array of features such as licensed royalty-free music, sound and video effects, and automatic captions in multiple languages. It also synchronizes audio and text styles saved on the mobile app, allows customization or importing of keyboard shortcuts, and supports importing custom fonts. Advanced editing tools like multi-track timelines, keyframes for transitions, and audio waveforms enable detailed work on complex video projects.
Instagram has streamlined the publishing process by allowing creators to post directly to the platform from the desktop app with native functions like tagging and location incorporation, eliminating the previous need to transfer files between devices. Edits supports both horizontal and vertical videos and offers watermark-free exports in 4K resolution, making it versatile for cross-platform sharing or personal use.
Looking ahead, Instagram plans weekly updates to refine the desktop editor, working toward seamless project editing across desktop and mobile platforms. While emphasizing the growth of Edits for desktop users, Instagram also committed to continuing enhancements for its mobile app, which currently serves over 50 million creators worldwide.
